GANGTOK: The 14th State Basketball Open Championship for inter-school boys & girls and open men’s & women’s category, organised by the Basketball Association of Sikkim (BAS), is being held at the indoor basketball court, Paljor Stadium here from November 6 to 9.
The championship was inaugurated by BAS treasurer Tsultim Khampa and general secretary Jigmela Wazilingpa today morning.
The main aim for organising the championship is to promote basketball and sports in Sikkim, said Wazinlingpa. He mentioned that BAS also aims at providing a platform for the youths to showcase their talent and engage in healthy, sporting activities.
“For the first time, we have selected players (boys and girls) in the under-17 category. The selections were held at Mangan secondary school, Namchi senior secondary school and EMRS Gangyap. One boys’ team and one girls’ team will get an opportunity to participate in the national games to be held at Delhi on November 17,” said the BAS general secretary.
In the open category, there are two teams from Bhutan, one from Neal, one from Meghalaya, one from Army, three from West Bengal and four from Sikkim.
Schools from Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri are participating in the inter-school category.
The final will be held on November 9 and BAS is expecting Sports minister Kunga Nima Lepcha as the chief guest.
The winners will be awarded with cash prizes and trophies.
