The 3rd edition of Khangchendzonga Marathon concluded on Wednesday at Yuksam in West Sikkim. Five athletes including one female runner took part in the ultra-marathon race of 42 km in the high altitude area of West Sikkim.
The award ceremony of Khangchendzonga Marathon 2019 was held at Yuksam wherein the athletes shared with the audience the memorable moments experienced during the run.
“Khangchendzonga Marathon is not just a running event - it is truly a once in a lifetime experience”, said a 62 years-old participant.
Race director EveresterKunzangGyatso Bhutia presented medals and certificates to the first, second and third place winners and other participants during the award ceremony.
In 42-km race, Lallawmsanga from Mizoram clinched the first position, whereas SumeetVirmani, 51 years, from Gurgoanwas the runners-up. The third position was clinched by KailFurthmaier, 62 years, from Kolkata.
Lallawmsanga won the race in 5 hours 26 minutes. “The route is very challenging but amazing too. I feel proud to be the winner,” the 27-year-old athlete.
The marathon is organized by Sikkim Mountaineering Association and was conceptualised by EveresterKunzangGyatso Bhutia. It started in 2016.
Through this event, we aim to promote State in the tourism sector, said Kunzang. He appealed the State government to support the event.
