NAMCHI/ JORETHANG:  The auctions for the inaugural Jorethang Premier Badminton League, the first franchise-based sports league in Sikkim, took place on Sunday with some of the best shuttlers in the State going under the hammer.
AL total of 60 players were purchased during the exciting auction process at Jorethang by six different franchises – Unique Shuttlers, Red Panda GMTS, Jorethang Rising Star, The Racqueters, Namchi Smashers and Southern Phoenix.
Amon Rai from Namchi was the most expensive player. He was bought for Rs. 14,600 by Unique Shuttlers.  The auction was categorised into two slabs with a base price of Rs. 3,000 for top players and Rs. 2,000 for the rest of the players. Each franchise was allowed to invest a specified amount of Rs. 45,000 for 10 players.
Badminton Association of Sikkim president C. Zangpo was the observer of the auction.
BAJ president Jigmey Namgyal Bhutia informed that this is for the first time in Sikkim that a franchise-based league is being organised. He said such form will motivate the young generation and will encouragement them to play in this new format.
