GANGTOK: The sum of two zeros would be zero only, said Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) spokesperson Bhim Dahal on the electoral alliance being explored by Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) and State BJP unit.
Senior leaders of the two parties had recently held a meeting for possible alliance in the 2019 Assembly elections.
“Everyone knows on whose blessings that Bhaichung Bhutia (HSP vice president) has opened the HSP. He goes to Delhi to open the party, cannot have a president of the party even after six months. State BJP is merely trying to save its existence and run on directions from their superiors. What will happen when such few persons meet? Nothing will happen. We do not consider them as our challenge,” said the SDF spokesperson.
He was responding to media questions during the press meet held at Gangtok.
Dahal was accompanied by spokespersons K.T. Gyaltsen, T.N. Sharma and other executives of the ruling front.
Asked about claims made by Bhaichung that SDF has offered 10 seats to Central BJP leadership for 2019 elections, Dahal said: “We have felt no need of any alliance in these 27 years of our party. Our alliance is with the Janta. Bhaichung does not need to take the responsibility of announcing our alliances. We have our party spokespersons.”
Regarding the membership of SDF in NEDA and NDA, both led by the BJP, the SDF spokesperson asserted that the membership was done as per the decision of the SDF and Central high leadership. Our membership in NEDA and NDA is in the interest of the nation and State, development and security of the people of Sikkim, he said.
Recently the HSP had announced to approach the Supreme Court to remove the ‘immigrant’ tag on Sikkimese Nepails as mentioned in a 1990s judgement of the apex court.
Asked about this, Dahal said that the SDF has much earlier freed the Sikkimese Nepalis from the ‘immigrant’ tag adding that Sikkimese Nepalis are proud Indian citizens. He said this has been proved by the tribal status to the Limboo and Tamang communities. The income tax exemption to all Sikkimese in 2008 has established that Sikkimese Nepalis are Indian citizens, he said.
Spokesperson K.T. Gyaltsen said the 2019 Assembly elections will be fought by the SDF under the leadership of party president and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
SDF social media cell general secretary Avinash Yakha accused the SKM workers of engaging in dirty politics in social media.
SDF spokesperson Kavita Subba said the coming 2019 elections would be between ‘truth’ and ‘untruth’. The SDF will strongly fight against the ‘untruth’, she said.
