GANGTOK: National leaders of the Congress party are coming shortly to Sikkim to pursue a possible united opposition against the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in coming 2019 Assembly elections.
Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) president Bharat Basnet said unity among opposition political parties is a desire of the people of Sikkim and need of hour. Some regional parties are also keen towards an alliance, he said today in a press statement.
“The people of Sikkim, especially the youths, must understand what Sikkim has gained and lost under the 25-year rule of a regional party. Our State is under heavy debt, leaders of the regional party have become millionaires by looting the Central funds while the situation of the common people has become worse,” said Basnet.
He said regional party cannot resolve the pending political issues like Limboo-Tamang seat reservation and tribal status for the left-out communities.
“The issues raised by the regional party have seen no progress since their one MP cannot do much in a Parliament that has 545 members. Only Congress can resolve the issues of Sikkim. Congress president Rahul Gandhi has special interest towards Sikkim and we appeal all regional parties and people not to lose this opportunity,” said the SPCC president.
