GANGTOK: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Wednesday attended the concluding programme of a public outreach campaign of SC cell of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) here at SDF Bhawan.
In his address, the Chief Minister shared that the SDF government has given proper justice to the SC community and appealed the community to remember the past days.
“We have given 8% government job reservation to the SC community who are 5% of the total population in Sikkim. Two percent reservation is there for backward classes within SC community who follow Christianity and six percent reservation is for the Hindu SC community,” said Chamling.
“I am hearing that other SC communities are angry with me for giving two percent reservation to the Christian SC community. Tyesto garnu hudaina. We must consider them also as our own people. It is my responsibility as the Chief Minister to protect all. The laws in our country do not give any right to SC people who have adopted Christianity. Hence, it is my responsibility to give justice to them also from this constitutional post of a Chief Minister,” said Chamling.
Earlier, SDF SC cell chairman A.S. Baraily had presented some demands regarding the SC community of Sikkim.
On these demands, the Chief Minister said that one post of Zilla Adyaksha would be reserved for the SC community in the next panchayat elections. Similarly, the post of the chairperson of a municipal body would be reserved for the SC community, he said.
It had also been demanded that there should be representative from the SC community in the Rajya Sabha from Sikkim.
The Chief Minister expressed his happiness on the demand and said he is also in favour of having a Rajya Sabha MP from the SC community of Sikkim.
SC cell chairman A.S. Baraily, in his address, maintained that the SDF government has been working for the development of the SC community of Sikkim since 1994. It is now the turn of SC community to respond in a similar manner, he said appealing the community not to work against the ruling front in 2019 elections.
