11 from Sikkim to represent India at international strengthlifting C’ship

GANGTOK: Eleven athletes from Sikkim, including eight men and three women, have been selected to represent India in the 7th International Strengthlifting and Incline Bench Press Championship at Pench, Madhya Pradesh from January 17 to 20. The championship is being organised by the Asian Strengthlifting Federation in coordination with Indian Strengthlifting Federation and Maharashtra Strengthlifting Association.
The team from Sikkim Strengthlifting Association (SSA) will be headed by chief coach and international gold medallist Pema Dorjee Bhutia. The association members interacted with the media ahead of the international event.
OSD to CM P.W. Rinzing was the chief guest, SSA president T.D. Denzongpa, SSA executive members and the 11 strengthlifters from all four districts of Sikkim were also present.
Rinzing expressed delight to meet the strengthlifters and congratulated them on behalf of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
“Sikkim is a strong, young and healthy State both mentally and psychologically. The State government will always support players from every field of sports. Hope all your dreams come true,” he said.
Since the establishment of SSA in 2016, the association has performed well at the national and international levels. The team includes strengthlifters from all four districts. “It is a proud moment as three Sikkimese women will represent India for the first time. Next time, we are trying to include more women from Sikkim at the national and international levels,” expressed president Denzongpa.
