The Trinamul Congress will support the candidate of the Binay Tamang-led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat which is likely to be declared on Wednesday.
Significantly, Rajen Mukhia, the Trinamul’s minder for Darjeeling sub-division, said here today that the Morcha candidate will contest in his party’s symbol. This, party sources said, was being done to ensure Trinamul supporters in the plains vote for the Morcha candidate.
Sources also said that the candidate’s name will be announced jointly by the Morcha and Trinamul mostly likely on Wednesday. Tamang left here for Kolkata to consult with the Trinamul leadership on the Darjeeling candidate.
Mukhia was here to attend meetings with the party’s various frontal organisations to prepare for the election. “Today’s meeting with our trade union leaders and teachers was to prepare ground work for the election. We wanted understand the local problems and how best they can be solved,” he said.
While the tie-up between the Morcha and Trinamul is a certainty, other political outfits are struggling to field a consensus candidate, particularly after the CPRM unilaterally declared that its president R. B. Rai would be its candidate.
However, the CPRM has thrown in a rider by stating that it would withdraw the name of Rai if other parties agree on a better candidate than him.
The name of the consensus candidate is likely to be announced by March 15.
