BAGDOGRA,: Amar Singh Rai, the sitting Darjeeling MLA from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, who was named the Darjeeling Lok Sabha candidate of the ruling Trinamool Congress was accorded a grand welcome at Bagdogra airport today.
Scores of Trinamool Congress and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (Binay Tamang faction) supporters had gathered at the airport to receive Rai, named the consensus candidate of both the parties. The road show from Bagdogra concluded at Darjeeling More.
GJM chief Binay Tamang, TMC Darjeeling chief and Tourism minister Gautam Deb including thousands of people welcomed Amar Singh Rai who landed at Bagdogra from Kolkata this morning.
Traffic at Bagdogra came to halt and passengers faced trouble in entry and exit from the gate due to crowd and hundreds of vehicles parked inside and outside the airport premises.
The supporters gathered just outside the exit gate of the airport gate were shouting slogans against absconding GJM chief Bimal Gurung and BJP leader S.S. Ahluwalia.
GJM Mahila Morcha leader Tshering Dahal who was at airport said, “The gathering here proves that they are happy about the candidate for Darjeeling seat. We are glad that Gorkha leader from Darjeeling has been chosen for the candidature.”
GJM affiliated Darjeeling Terai Dooars Plantation Labour Union central committee vice president Harihar Acharya informed that hundreds of tea workers from Hills, Terai and Dooars had reached airport to welcome Amar Singh Rai.
According to political observers, the GJM-TMC alliance will give a big fight against the BJP candidate in the Darjeeling seat. The Left front and the Congress parties will have to face tough time until a strong alliance is made.
Rai was escorted by the GJM and TMC supporters from the Bagdogra airport to Kurseong.
GJM president Binay Tamang said the huge public support to Rai was an endorsement of his candidature. “It felt more like a victory rally today. This is a very good indication as people had come without us calling them. Moreover, our supporters from the rural areas did not come today or the crowd would have been much more,” he said.
“Previously I was claiming that our candidate would win by one and half lakh votes but looking at the huge turnout of the people today I can confidently say that he will win by 2 lakh votes. Even if the BJP brings Narendra Modi or Amit Shah here, the BJP candidate will forfeit from here,” said Tamang.
According to Tamang, Amar Rai will be handing his resignation from the post of MLA day after tomorrow at Kolkata and will file his nomination on March 26.
Speaking about their alliance with the TMC, Tamang said, ¨It was clear to the people after we joined the Third Front that we were with the TMC. In politics there is give and take as people wanted a bhumiputra (son of the soil) candidate which the TMC core committee agreed upon and they wanted the candidate to fight from the TMC ticket which we agreed on.”
Tamang also reiterated the issues that would be taken up for this election which they had earlier placed with the Third Front.
The issues include Gorkha identity along with safety and security of the community in the country, tribal status for the 11 communities, parcha patta for the cinchona and tea garden workers, linguistic minority status for the Nepali community, GTA to be put in the North East Council, implementation of minimum wages in the tea gardens and constitutional recognition of the GTA.
