A 23-member Sikkim football team will be leaving for Ludhiana, Punjab on Saturday to participate in the final round of the National football championship for Hero Santosh Trophy to be held from April 8-21.
After a gap of 14 years, the Sikkim team qualified for the final round of the Santosh Trophy this year. En route to qualifications, they beat defending champions West Bengal.
Sikkim Football Association (SFA) president Menla Ethenpa, who interacted with the team here at Paljor Stadium and wished them luck today, also detailed media on the preparations of the team.
Ethenpa said Sikkim team underwent rigorous training under technical directors Arjun Rai and Chewang Paul Sangdarpa.
“Two sessions of coaching camp were held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok and Mangan. The Mangan camp was first such organised by the SFA. The fortnight-long residential camp was held with the aim to train our players as well as get them acclimatized with weather before their departure,” said Ethenpa. He expressed hope that the boys will give their best in the final round.
SFA joint secretary Arjun Rai said that most of the players are below the age of 21 and SFA has high hopes from them. He also informed that the SFA has roped in a coach from Dehradun for the tournament.
“The criterion of the championship was to have a chief coach of AFC 'B' license holder. Since there are only AFC 'C' license holders in Sikkim, we hired Keshav Dutt from Dehradun as the chief coach.”
The Sikkim team will start their Santosh Trophy campaign against Karnataka on April 11. They will next face Assam on April 13, Punjab on April 15 and Maharashtra on April 17. The semi-finals will be played on April 19, and the final on April 21.
