82 percent voting in West Sikkim

GANGTOK,: Voting for the eight Assembly constituencies in West Sikkim and Sangha and the lone Lok Sabha seat was peacefully held in 141 polling stations of West Sikkim on Thursday, an IPR release from Geyzing informs.
The district recorded 82 percent voting for the eight seats wherein 90,213 voters including 46,323 male and 43,890 voters exercised their voting rights. Also, a total of 524 voters voted for the Sangha seat out of which 522 were male and two female.
A total of 9 model polling stations were designated where Braille voting slips, transportation facilities for PWD voters, help desk, resting place for senior voters, coffee vending machines, drinking water facilities, volunteer assistance, ‘I voted’ Tags, selfie booths and welcome gate for pink polling booths were main highlight of the day.
A total of 657 PWD voters are registered in West Sikkim out of which Rinchenpong has the largest number with 201 PWD voters. 200 volunteers were kept for assistance to the PWD voters who were also trained to assist them, the IPR release informs.
The constituency wise voting was Yoksam Tashiding (84%), Yangthang (80 %), Maneybong Dentam (82%), Gyalshing Barnyak (80%), Rinchenpong (84%), Daramdin (80%), Soreng Chakung (82%) and Salghari Zoom (82%).
West district had a total number of 1,10,497 registered voters including 56,330 male and 54,167 female voters. Of the 141 polling booths, 6 pink polling booths were exclusively manned by women presiding officers, polling officers and women security personnel. Nine polling booths were tagged as model polling booths with facilities like welcome gates, help desk, wheel chairs, volunteer assistance and transport facilities to the PWD voters. Braille voter slip was also provided to the visually challenged voters.
A new initiative of the West District was the selfie booths, ‘I Voted’ badges to women and PWD voters, coffee vending machines and  resting space for PWD women and senior citizens. The overall aim was to motivate the women voters and PWD voters to participate in the election process and to make it accessible to all.
The district nodal officer for accessibility and pink polling booths, Bhumika Pradhan informed that the West Sikkim has a total of 657 PWD voters and   Rinchenpong constituency has 201 numbers of PWD voters the highest in West district. Out of 141 polling booths, 73 polling booths had PWD voters. Apart from the facilities at polling booths, 200 volunteers had been trained earlier and sector magistrates and booth level officers personally met the PWD voters and sensitized them to access their voting rights.
Amongst the 73 PWD polling stations, Pechrek Martam under Gyalshing Barnyak constituency polling stations, Lungzik Amobety primary school achieved a 100 percent PWD voter turnout. On an average the district achieved above 90 percent PWD voter turnouts, the IPR release adds.
A day after the voting, the scrutiny of Form 17 ‘C’; 17 'A' and presiding officers’ diary were done today by the West Returning Officer Karma R. Bonpo along with general observer Faisal Aftab, ADC (West) Karma L. Lepcha, SDM (HQ) Tushar G. Nikhare, Geyzing SDM Gilbert Lepcha and representatives of political parties along with the contesting candidates.
Bonpo explained the political parties as to why the scrutiny process was done in their presence along with the general observer. He also asked the contesting candidates and the political representatives to clear their grievances in case if they have any.
The general observer interacted with the political parties and viewed the documents extensively for the candidate’s benefits. He met with the micro observers who were deployed in the 20 critical polling stations of West Sikkim.
The scrutiny was carried out from 11 am onwards and was done as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India. During the scrutiny of the documents, none of the polling stations was found to contradict with the guidelines of the ECI norms, the IPR release informs.
