GANGTOK,: Sikkim men’s football team crashed out of Santosh Trophy after losing against Punjab at Ludhiana, Punjab today.
Sikkim lost 0-1 today to register three losses in as many matches in the group stage, and are practically out the annual domestic tournament organised by All India Football Federation.
They still have one game left, against Maharashtra on 17, but result should make no difference.
Sikkim entered the main round of the tournament after a gap of 14 years. However, the team couldn’t replicate their performance of the qualifying stage in the tournament.
“Although we lost, the players played very well today. As always, we were unable to find goal,” opined a Sikkim football official.
Nevertheless, some of Sikkim players attracted scouts with their performance. It is informed that an Indian Army team has already made offers to few boys, while football clubs from Goa have set sights on the Sikkim players.
This Santosh Trophy campaign will definitely go down as one the forgetful one for Sikkim team but they should, for now, be proud for making the final round of the tournament for only the second time in the new millennium and come back next season stronger.
