Tue, May 14, 2019

DARJEELING,: GJM leader Binay Tamang today said the GTA election and panchayat election in the hills would be held by the end of this year. He was addressing street corner meetings in Darjeeling town area while campaigning for the Darjeeling Assembly constituency election.
Tamang is the GJM candidate for Darjeeling Assembly constituency.
“The GTA election and the two-tier panchayat elections will be held here within this year. The State government is presently reviewing the GTA Act and after that work is completed, the GTA elections will be held. After the GTA elections are held, the eight blocks of the hills will be bifurcated into twelve after which the two-tier panchayat elections will be held,” said Tamang as per a party press release.
The GTA election was to take place in 2017 but got postponed as the hills witnessed a Gorkhaland agitation and a 104-day strike. The then GTA chairman Bimal Gurung and all the other elected members had resigned from their posts.
Later, the State government set up board of administrators to run the GTA with Tamang as its chairman. His term has been extended for a couple of times.
Tamang recently resigned from his post of chairman to contest the upcoming Darjeeling Assembly election. Anit Thapa was appointed as the GTA chairman.
Meanwhile, it has been more than a decade since the last panchayat elections in the hills. The rural body election should have taken place in 2005 but could not take place due to opposition from the GNLF, the then ruling party in the hills.
