Oath-taking function on May 27 at Paljor Stadium

SE Report
GANGTOK: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president P.S. Golay on Saturday led the 17 winning candidates of his party to call on the Governor and lay claim to form the new government in Sikkim. A resolution from the 17 SKM MLAs containing the claim was submitted to the Governor at Raj Bhawan at 11.30 am.
The formation of SKM government is a formality considering the simple majority achieved by the Golay-led party in the Assembly elections, result of which, had been declared on May 23.
“We submitted a resolution to the Governor. We will wait for the Governor to call us (to form the government). We will do the oath-taking function on May 27 at Paljor Stadium in front of the public. It is the people who have elected us and we want to have the oath-taking function in front of them,” said Golay to reporters at Raj Bhawan.
Asked on who will be the Chief Minister, Golay said that it will be known soon. You will come to know soon, he said.
Golay did not contest the Assembly elections but the SKM has already committed in its election campaign the party president is its Chief Ministerial candidate. This was also submitted to the Governor during the call-on today.
It is learnt that the Governor has sought a legal and constitutional opinion regarding the proposal of Golay as the Chief Ministerial candidate. This was necessitated as Golay had been convicted under Prevention of Corruption Act case and sentenced to one year jail.
Meanwhile, Golay said the SKM party will ‘strictly implement’ all the election promises made to the people of Sikkim once it takes oath as the government. He was responding to a question on whether Mintokgang, the official residence of the Chief Minister, would be converted into a cancer hospital as previously announced by him.
“We had already announced it (Mintokgang as cancer hospital) before hand at the party-level. We will strictly implement it,” said the SKM president.
Golay maintained that the SKM government will not do ‘vendetta’ politics and will not politically discriminate the supporters of the other political parties. We don’t have any such revenge politics in our mind, government employees can work freely…I have already told the chief secretary to work in a free manner as a chief secretary and there will be no political interference from our side, he said.
To a question, Golay said the SKM party is ready for by-elections in three constituencies which could be four constituencies in the event of him taking oath as the Chief Minister.
“As an opposition party, we had prepared hard for contesting the Assembly elections and got 17 seats. Now we are in the government. We are ready at the party-level to contest the by-elections,” said Golay.
The by-elections are needed as SDF president Pawan Chamling, SDF candidate D.T. Lepcha and SKM candidate Kunga Nima Lepcha have won from two constituencies each. As per norms, they have to leave one constituency as per their choice leaving it for by-poll within six months.
Golay was also asked what would be the first Parivartan that will come from SKM government. “You will see what kind of Parivartan will come. We will show in a direct manner once we form the government,” he said.
To a question on CBI entry to Sikkim, Golay also replied in a similar manner mentioning that he would be informing about it on a later time.
