Confident of continued support from Gangtok voters to SKM in by-poll also: Golay

KUNAL RAI
GANGTOK:
Chief Minister P.S. Golay on Saturday recorded his confidence that voters of Gangtok would again deliver the capital seat to the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in coming by-poll.
“The SKM had won from Gangtok in 2014 but unfortunately, our party candidate betrayed the people and the party. Despite this, people of Gangtok again gave us the opportunity to represent them in 2019 elections. It is based on this trust and confidence you have on SKM that we have vacated Gangtok seat. We are confident that people of Gangtok will again wholeheartedly support the SKM in coming by-poll,” said Golay.
The Chief Minister was addressing a thanksgiving programme organised by the SKM party at a hotel here to express thanks to the people of Gangtok. The SKM won the Sikkim Assembly elections with 17 seats including the Gangtok constituency.
By-election is taking place for Gangtok as its incumbent MLA and HRD minister Kunga Nima Lepcha opted to stay as Shyari MLA and resigned from Gangtok seat. By-polls are also taking place for Poklok-Kamrang and Martam-Rumtek constituencies.
Golay maintained that the SKM will sweep all the three constituencies in the coming by-election giving more numbers to the ruling Morcha in the Assembly. “We are in the majority and our government will not go. We will have greater majority after the by-election,” he said.
Golay stressed that he along with Kunga Nima are there with the people of Gangtok.
On his part, Kunga Nima said he vacated Gangtok constituency with a heavy heart as he had to follow ECI norms. “Though I have vacated Gangtok seat, I will work like its MLA and minister for the people of Gangtok. I appeal people to approach me without any hesitation with their demands which we will fulfil in consultation with the Chief Minister,” he said.
In his address, Golay said the SKM government is committed to the promises made to the people of Sikkim. He spoke about the steps taken within 13 days of forming the SKM government which includes declaring all Saturdays as holidays. We will act strictly on removing the culture of service extension in the government, he said.
If we fail to deliver our promises then we will not come to the doorsteps of the people seeking votes again in next election, said Golay. He shared that the SKM government will prepare white paper of every department and make it public. We are presently taking details of the accounts and works of the previous government as we do not want to be blamed for their misdeeds, he said.
The Chief Minister also commented on the proceedings that marred the first session of the Xth Sikkim Legislative Assembly on June 3.
Former Chief Minister and SDF president Pawan Chamling, along with the SDF legislators, had walked out from the House after protesting Golay’s appointment as the Chief Minister.
“Chamling is still unable to digest the defeat he suffered in the 2019 Assembly elections. He should have expressed thanks to the people of Sikkim for giving him the opportunity to rule Sikkim for 25 years,” said Golay. He said Chamling did not accorded respect to the Speaker though it was for the first time that a member of the SC community was made as the Speaker.
Golay maintained that the BJP-led Union government is supporting the SKM government in Sikkim. We are in the alliance of the BJP-led government and we extend our congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for coming to power again with an overwhelming majority, he said.
Regarding the controversy over the ‘One Family, One Job’ circular from DoP, the Chief Minister said the previous SDF government had issued appointment orders under the scheme during the model code of conduct period which is a violation of the ECI norms. We have constituted a commission which will evaluate, carry out scrutiny and based on that fact finding, we will extend order, he said appealing people not to panic.
The meeting was also addressed by SKM general secretary (Byapari Morcha) Amar Agarwal.
