GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Police today denied reports that the former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has been provided the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) security. The so called SPG commandos guarding Chamling actually were private security guards hired by Chamling himself.
Clearing the air on the issue, Sikkim Police DIG (Range) Sonam Tenzing Bhutia today told a news conference that reports of SPG provided to the former CM was untrue and the two ‘well-built men’ were mere security guards each hired by Chamling for Rs.35,000 a month.
“The public were confused on the arrival of the SPG guards following which we conducted an enquiry. On being questioned it was revealed that the two men imprinted as SPG were security guards actually hired by the former Chief Minister. They hailed from Palwa district of Haryana and carried.32 small revolver with all India licence for self-protection purpose and do not belong to any security agency,” said Bhutia. He added that the two men have left Sikkim now.
According to the DIG, anyone is allowed to hire personal security guards but when it includes arms then the police intervene for verifications and during this the police came to know the reality of these guards. He also highlighted that SPG can cater security service only to the serving and retired Prime Ministers of the country.
Set up in 1985, a year after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the SPG is tasked with protecting the prime minister, former PMs and their families based on threat perception.
Talking about the safety and security of the former CM, the State government has already deputed two PSOs and a section of IRBn jawans at his residence, it was informed.
Sikkim is a safe and secure place and both the State government and Sikkim Police are giving the best in terms of security, the DIG expressed.
