President to attend Sikkim University convocation on Nov 3 ISABELLA GURUNG

GANGTOK: The 5thconvocation of Sikkim University is scheduled to be held at Manan Kendra here on November 3. President Ram NathKovind has given his consent to be the chief guest during the convocation.
Governor and chief rector of Sikkim University Ganga Prasad and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) will be the guests of honour.Sikkim University chancellor Lt. Gen. (Retd.)D.B. Shekatkar will preside over as the convocation proceedings. Sharing details of the convocation at a news conference here today, Sikkim University chancellor Shekatkar said in the 21st century, knowledge is power. “We aim at making our students not just degree holders, but knowledgeable and acceptable all over India. The vision of SU is to train our students for skill development in various sectors. Convocation is a solemn but important occasion in any university for its students, faculty and staff,” he expressed. Vice-chancellor Prof. AvinashKhare informed that during the convocation, degrees will be bestowed upon students who have passed out in the years 2017-19. A total of 580 students (2019) and 900 students (2017-18) have registered for the ceremony. More than 200 students will be awarded gold and silver medals. Out of 122 gold medals, 74 are being received by girls. The President will hand over gold medals to 11 top medallists in person. The 11 gold medallists are SushmitaChhetri (School of Life Sciences), JigmeeWangchuk Bhutia (School of Language & Literature), Jeshmeen Deb Barman (School of Human Sciences), Pankaj Roy (School of Physical Sciences), AasthaRai (School of Social Sciences), MingyorDendhup Bhutia (School of Professional Studies), Preksha Sharma (Himalayan Pharmacy Institute, Majhitar), Sanila Tamang (Loyala College of Education (Namchi), Royal Pradhan (NB Bhandari Degree College, Tadong), Samir Tamang (Namchi Government College, Namchi) and Ruth KumariRai (Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing). The convocation will be held in two phases. In the first phase, students who have passed out in 2019 will be bestowed degrees and medals. This phase will start at 10 am and the President will attend the event from 10-11 am. The second phase for students who have passed out in 2017-19 will begin from 4 pm, at the same venue, added registrar T.K. Kaul.
