GANGTOK,: Bikash Jairu has become the first Sikkimese footballer to complete 50 matches in Indian Super League (ISL), the nation’s foremost professional football league.
The 30-year-old left winger reached the milestone of 50 ISL appearances while playing for SC East Bengal against Northeast United FC in an ISL match at Margao, Goa. The game ended with the Robbie Fowler’s men losing 1-2 to the Northeastern side leaving SC East Bengal in the 9th position.
Jairu, who hails from Geyzing in West Sikkim, wants to build on the lessons learnt from his 7th ISL campaign and improve upon it with hard work.
“I am happy with the achievement of 50 ISL appearances, the first from Sikkim to do so. I will continue to work hard and look forward to future. There are always ups and downs in football,” said Jairu over phone to SIKKIM EXPRESS.
Jairu has so far played four matches for the Kolkata club. He had debuted in the second season of ISL when Pune City FC took him on a loan. He played 11 games for the Pune franchise in 2015.
In 2016, Jairu joined ATK on a loan but could not play due to injuries.
It was with Jamshedpur FC where the Sikkimese footballer rose to prominence. He played 35 ISL games for the Tata-owned club for three ISL seasons from 2017 to 2020. He also became the first Sikkimese footballer to score an ISL goal during his stint with Jamshedpur FC.
For the 2020-21 season, Jairu joined East Bengal FC but the club could not live up to the expectations.
SC East Bengal plays its last match on February 27 ending a disappointing ISL campaign for Robbie Fowlers and the players.
