"A Happy journey in Denzong"

(9.4.1936 – 9.9.2020)
In the beginning of 19th century (1801-1900), there were few roads and rail connections in the then British India. However, the enterprising Marwari families who hailed from Rajasthan and Haryana, explored the mountain routes, walked on foot and found shelter, started trade, partnered businesses with locals and settled therein; that is how they became part and parcel of this  Himalayan kingdom known as Denzong& Sikkim.
In early 1930, Shri Kishanlall Agarwal moved from Rangoon(then Burma) to Calcutta and then to Kalimpong at 10th mile. They started the business under barter system in the firm’s name Bharat Store with business peoples of Kalimpong and Gangtok. Till the start of 2nd World War our main business was concentrated at Kalimpong. During the year 1940, Shri Kishanlall Agarwal called upon his young son Shri Madanlall Agarwal to assist him.
After 1948, the business of Kalimpong was closed down and shifted to Sikkim. After few days of arrival in Sikkim, Shri Kishanlall Agarwal requested the Sikkim State Banker M/S JethmullBhojraj through Shri InderchandjiMarda to keep young and energetic Shri Madanlall Agarwal to serve their business. In the year 1952, Shri Madanlall Agarwal was shifted to Yatung&Pharri in Tibet as an accountant of JethmullBhojraj. He served for four years in Tibet and then returned in 1956 to Gangtok as he could not face the harsh climate of Tibet Plateau. In the year 1960, Shri Ramswaroop Agarwal only son of Shri Madanlall Agarwal joined the Transport Company  and was posted to Gangtok to open a branch of Air Transport Corporation (ATC). The branch was opened in Indo Sikkim Premises at M G Marg,Gangtok and latter shifted to Rattan Bhawan near Metro Point.
Late Shri KB Thapa (Kaiser BahadurThapa) was the mentor of Shri Ramswaroop Agarwal. Shri BhagwandassBaporia was the god father and helped the family in many ways.  Shri Ramswaroop Agarwal happened to meet Yap TSGyalsten whom he regarded with great respect as a guardian. In the year 1976, Trateng family gave advice to start business of aerated water & soda which was new in Sikkim. Some years later, opportunities grew up and OlaneSardar gave him space of a shop in his building to start business of provision goods & grocery. During the year 1986 he transformed the retail business into wholesale business and then to Distribution business of MNC products under the firm name of M/S Ramswaroop& Sons.
Late Ramswaroop Agarwal was popularly known ATCwala in the business community and locals. He got blessings from H.E. Chogyal of Sikkim on many occasions. He loved Sikkim and its warm hearted community. He like others adapted the Sikkimese lifestyle, language and culture. During Holi festival, he used to sing Holi songs with Shri RinzingLepcha (former Minister during Kazi Times), Pokermulljee Agarwal, JaganlaljeeLakhotia, KhyaliramjeeSinghi, PyragchandjeeSarda, MahabirPdPeriwaljee and others. Late UdairamjiDabriwal was guardian of Shri Ramswaroop Agarwal and helped him in difficult times.
His 84 years of life was remarkable and shining to us in all aspect of life.
On his demise on 9th September 2020 at the age of 84 years, we will certainly miss his warmth affection and kinship and most importantly we will miss his elderly advice and guidance. He had deep affectionate feeling for the peoples with whom he lived so long.
