DARJEELING:
GJM leader Binay Tamang has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a permanent political solution for safety and security of the Indian Gorkhas with creation of separate State of Gorkhaland.
In his letter to the Prime Minister yesterday, Tamang said: “I would like to remind you of the promises made to Indian Gorkha citizens by your office repeatedly from 2014 till date to permanently solve the acute identity crisis faced by the Indian Gorkhas by carving out a specific homeland for the Gorkhas. However, the cherished dream of the Gorkhas to have a State of their own has not materialized till date and the entire Gorkha community is waiting eagerly for 11 years.”
“I would like to bring it to your notice about the plight of the entire Indian Gorkhas vis-à-vis their Indian identity. Though Gorkhas are settled in India for centuries or even before the birth of our nation, every Gorkha faces terrible foreigner’s stigma/tag and severe humiliation all over the country because of their similar caste and facial appearance with that of the people of Nepal,” said the Morcha leader in the letter.
Tamang maintained that with the rise of BJP in Indian politics, a new hope was born among the Indian Gorkhas who looked upon BJP as their ultimate savior. But so far they had been disappointed by the silence of the Indian government and the BJP, he said.
“The Gorkhas thought and believed that BJP, which has formed the government at the national level since 2014 would understand the extreme identity crisis faced by the Gorkhas all over India and hoped that the BJP government would liberate the Gorkhas. It is because of this fact that the Gorkhas all over India supported the BJP during 2009, 2014 and 2019 parliamentary elections,” Tamang said.
“The Gorkhas all over India were overwhelmed by the election manifesto of the BJP party, who unequivocally promised to “sympathetically” examine and appropriately consider the long pending demand of the Gorkhas and the Adivasis in its election manifesto. The Gorkhas were further overjoyed when BJP promised to make a permanent political solution for the Gorkhas which the Gorkhas believed and hoped to be a separate State of Gorkhaland. The Gorkhas all over the nation are patiently waiting for their dreams to materialize and culminate into a State for the Indian Gorkhas,” he added.
The letter also stated that the Gorkhas believed and hoped that the promises made to their community will be fulfilled by the Prime Minister and a formal bill will be introduced in the coming session of the Parliament for creation of a separate State of Gorkhaland as promised.
“We demand that a formal introduction of a bill in the ensuing Parliamentary session for permanent political solution of the Gorkhas in the form of a separate State of Gorkhaland,” Tamang wrote.
