Chamling demand awards and incentives for Covid frontliners

SE Report
GANGTOK: Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Wednesday sought bravery awards and financial incentives for those State government employees engaged as frontliners against the Covid-19 pandemic.
In an open letter posted on his social media page, Chamling said the Covid-19 warriors risked their lives and made no compromise when they were needed to stand for Sikkim. I therefore request the government to announce a Rs. 1 crore insurance cover for all the Covid-19 frontline warriors, he said.
Chamling, also the SDF president, urged the State government to announce a financial reward of Rs. 10 lakh each for gazetted employees and Rs. 5 lakh each for non-gazetted employees. The State government must constitute bravery awards of different orders to be given to them post-pandemic in accordance with their contribution, he said.
“The ad hoc employment of all the Covid-19 frontline warriors must be regularized as special cases with retrospective effect, starting on the day they joined their Covid-19 duty. The Covid-19 warriors are working in the highest risk situation which is completely different from working in a normal situation. Their salary must be doubled during their duty period,” demanded the SDF president.
“All the Covid-19 frontline warriors must be incentivized by way of provision of special promotions in their jobs. Their Covid-19 duty must be counted as special merit to be given due consideration for promotion,” said Chamling.
The former Chief Minister recorded his respect and gratitude to the frontliners.
“When I see you in the forefront of this battle, I bow my head before you all in deep gratitude and honour! I am moved with heartfelt love and compassion for you all. I think of your dear ones who you leave at home – your spouses, children, parents, in-laws and other near and dear ones – not knowing what lies ahead of you. You provide much needed care to the patients. You patrol the community, ensuring public safety. You face the virus head on, making sure that we are kept safe from its attack.”
“I convey my heartfelt thanks to all the families who share these brave-hearts with Sikkim for our victory in this historic battle. I cannot begin to fathom the pain, worry and anxiety you are going through minute by minute. Please know that your family’s contribution to the security and victory of Sikkim will be remembered with great appreciation for years and years to come,” posted Chamling.
