NAMCHI,: The 9th All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup football tournament, organised by South District Football Association (SDFA), is scheduled to kick-off at Jorethang ground on January 5, 2020.
A meeting of the newly formed SDFA committee was held at Namchi today to discuss preparations for the Chief Minister’s Gold Cup. The SDFA new committee is headed by Arjun Rai as its president.
The tournament is being held after a gap of five years and has been timed with the Jorethang Magey Mela 2020 celebrations. The State government has sanctioned a grant of Rs. 10 lakh for holding the tournament, it was informed.
A total of 14 teams including clubs from Nepal and Bhutan are taking part in the tournament. Four teams are from Sikkim which includes Sikkim Youth Club Gangtok, Sikkim Himalayan SC, South-West XI and Sikkim Police. Other teams have been drawn from Kolkata, Kalimpong, Darjeeling and elsewhere.
The final of the tournament will take place on January 19, the concluding day of the Jorethang Magey Mela celebration, informed SDFA general secretary Pavitra Manav.
“International clubs from Nepal and Bhutan are taking part in the Chief Minister’s Gold Cup football tournament. The prize money for the winner is Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh for the runners up along with trophies,” said the SDFA general secretary.
SDFA treasurer Shanker Agarwal informed that the organising committee is writing to various private companies and industries in Sikkim for financially supporting the tournament.
SDFA president Arjun Rai expressed that the premier football tournaments like Chief Minister’s Gold Cup and Governor’s Gold Cup aims to encourage the upcoming football talents of Sikkim. The tournament is being held as per the directives of the Chief Minister for encouraging our football talents, he said.
It was informed that, instead of the ‘man of the match’ award, the tournament will have ‘Hero of the match’ with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000.
