Cycle rally to spread clean, green Darjeeling message

DARJEELING: To make people aware on keeping Darjeeling clean and green, a cycle rally was organised alongside programmes here on the occasion of National Youth Day.
The event was organized by the office of the district magistrate and supported by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and Ramakrishna Mission to mark National Youth Day commemorating the 157thbirth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
“The main aim of the programme is to make people and tourists aware on clean and green Darjeeling,” said Darjeeling ADM (D) BanishikaDey.
HMI principal Jai Kishan said the programmewas organized on National Youth Day as the contribution of the youth is needed for the development of any country. “We also feel that if we move forward with the teachings of Swami Vivekananda we can work for the betterment of the country and society,” he added.
The cycle rally started from Tenzing rock and ended at HMI after taking a round of the town.
A green booth was also inaugurated at Tenzing rock which will be kept there for 15 days to sensitize and initiate action among people on green and clean Darjeeling.
Dustbins were also handed over to shopkeepers in Tenzing rock area and books of Swami Vivekananda distributed to cyclists at HMI where the programme ended.
