GANGTOK: Dawa Sherpa struck a last-gasp goal to help Sikkim salvage a 1-1 draw against Meghalaya in Dr T Ao Trophy at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima today.
Midfielder Dawa Sherpa, who came in as substitute in second half, scored from probably the last kick of the game and providea better chance at qualifying for the semi-finals of the eight-team northeast football tournament.
Sikkim looked the better of the two teams but could create few clear cut chances. Goalkeeper Nidup Lepcha continued his brilliant form from the previous match.
Meghalaya on the other hand, did really well to defend a slender one-goal lead before the stoppage time brilliance from Sikkim led to a dramatic finish.
With four minutes of injury time added, it seemed one goal would be adequatefor Meghalaya, but then Sikkim scored in the 90+4th minute. Dawatapped in a header from TempaLhendup Bhutia to restore parity.
Having secured a point, Sikkim now needs juts a draw in the final game against Mizoram to qualify for the semi-finals. As per the rules of the tournament, the top two teams from the two pools progress directly to the semi-finals. Mizoram, with two wins from as many games (6 points), has already qualified for the semi-finals from Group B.
“We dominated the entire match but could not produce goals until the very last moment when it mattered most. Dawa Sherpa scored a fantastic goalto help us secure a draw,” said Sikkim team manager ArjunRai.
Sikkim will square off against group topper Mizoram in the final league match on Saturday. “Even a draw would be enough for us. We have a strong team, we are hopeful that we will qualify for the semis,” added Rai.
