Drikung Gyaltsey Charitable Trust donates dialysis machines to STNM Hospital

DICHEN ONGMU

GANGTOK,: Drikung Gyaltsey Charitable Trust donated an ADR machine and a computerized hemodialysis machine to STNM Hospital on Thursday.
Trustees Justice S.P. Wangdi, T.T. Dorji and Keshu Chungyalpa, and settlors Tashi Dadul Bhutia and Karma Gelay Chungyalpa handed over the machines to STNM Hospital medical superintendent K.B. Gurung.
The trust had originally intended to start a dialysis unit itself.
S.G. Kaleon, the chief functionary of the trust, said: “We wanted to start a dialysis unit but due to shortage of funds and pandemic situation, we thought of donating the machines to the hospital instead. We are aware that in Sikkim, large number of patients are undergoing dialysis treatment and the hospitals are in need of the machines.”
Kaleon said they are planning to donate an ADR machine to Namchi district hospital as well.
Thanking the trust for their noble gesture, medical superintendent K.B. Gurung said the machines were much needed. “The State government is supporting the hospital by providing dialysis machines but still due to the rise in number of kidney patients, we are in need of more machines. We are thankful to the trust and hope for such generous support from them in the future as well,” Gurung said.
Dr. B.N. Sharma, the head of dialysis unit at STNM Hospital, said ADR machine is used to clean dialyzer (artificial kidney).
“The automatic wash of dialyzer using ADR is effective and hygienic. Also, it will save the cost of one dialyzer as it can be reused by the patients,” Dr. Sharma said.
Dr. Sharma informed that the hospital presently has 17 dialysis machines and yet they fall short due to the rise in the number of patients.
“Though the dialysis unit is functional for almost 14 hours six days a week, we have 110 dialysis patients under treatment and 200 on the waiting list at present at STNM Hospital.”
