GANGTOK,: A local football club is organising a four-a-side Losoong /Namsoong Futsal Tournament here at Chandmari from December 12 and has invited participation from interested teams.
The tournament is a tribute to Argentine football legend Diego Maradona who died recently of a heart stroke, informed organisers Chandmari United Club today.
Along with the men’s open tournament, a veterans’ tournament will also be organised.
Sonam D. Wangchuk, interim president of Chandmari United Club, informed that the aim of the tournament is to provide a psychological boost to football players during this Covid pandemic.
The tournament will be held strictly following the Covid protocols.
Club spokesperson Tsewang Norbu Bhutia informed that the club has been organising football tournaments since their establishment in 2015. “We have produced many sportspersons in various disciplines from Chandmari and we aim to produce more in days to come by organising such tournaments,” said Bhutia.
Bhutia added that through this tournament they also intend to honour late Phigu Bhutia, who introduced football in Chandmari.
Thupten Rapgyal, the advisor and technical expert of the club, said, “Futsal is different from football. It’s all about skills and speed. We want to bring in real sense of futsal and showcase real skills of the players and therefore we have small goal posts compared to the usual ones.”
The tournament will be held at Fitnest Futsal Arena, Chandmari.
