Geyzing organic vegetable vendors demand transport facility for maintaining supply

GEYZING: Organic vegetable vendors here have demanded for proper transport facility to ensure regular supply of vegetables to Geyzing bazaar and surrounding areas. There is abundance of organic vegetables in the villages of West Sikkim but the restriction on vehicular movement has hindered transportation of vegetables where it is necessary, they said.
“The farmers of West Sikkim have enough stock to meet the demands of vegetables for three to four months without any hassles. The concern is only about transportation facilities. Due to lockdown, the farmers are not being able to sell their produce to urban buyers. Haat can be conducted even on daily basis in the town as vegetables are available in rural areas”, said the vegetable sellers here.
An organic Haat was set up recently near IDMST building (shopping complex) and the local civic body in coordination with Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs) had made provision for supply of vegetables at the Haat on Sunday.
However, vegetables stock in the Haat was exhausted by today afternoon as customers rushed for buying since early morning. Despite shortage of vegetables in the town, the prices of the vegetables were reasonable at the Haat, it was informed.
Social distancing measures were maintained at the Haat with law enforcing authority keeping vigil on the same. The west district administration has been working to resolve the issue pertaining to vegetables supply and other essential commodities in the district.
Geyzing Food Supplies in-charge Prakash Pradhan, stated, “14 foods godowns are functional in west district and under various schemes, food grains would be provided to the beneficiaries on monthly basis. The people should not panic as the essential commodities are also available at the grocery stores in town.”
