Governor flags-off ITBP expedition


GANGTOK,: Governor Ganga Prasad flagged-off a frontier level trekking expedition of 13th BN, ITBP at Raj Bhawan here on Sunday.
A 20-member team led by battalion commandant Chandan Singh Bhandari will start the expedition from Yuksam, West Sikkim on October 11.
Extending his best wishes to the team, the Governor said the jawans on the border are “bravely and relentlessly” working for the safety and security of the nation despite extreme weather conditions and high terrain. He maintained that the jawans not only serve and support the civilians but also extend their help to the tourists during emergencies.
“We can breathe and sleep peacefully due to the efficient duty performance by the jawans,” the Governor said.
Further, the Governor urged the Sikkimese to participate in ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ in honour of the revolutionaries who gave their lives to attain country’s freedom, acknowledge their sacrifices and work towards making India a prosperous nation.
Gangtok SHQ DIG R.P.S. Raghuvanshi said the main objective of the expedition is to make the jawans physically agile to carry out duties efficiently in adverse conditions followed by inducement of adventurous spirit among force personnel and to familiarise troops with psychological aspects of high altitude.
Likewise, expedition leader Chandan Singh Bhandari informed that the trekking will commence from Yuksam at an altitude of 4985 ft and pass through various places upto 16,000 ft altitude covering the total distance of 390 kms – 290 kms by vehicle and 100 kms on foot in 11 days.
“During the expedition, ecological balance will be maintained. Flora and fauna won’t be disturbed. Medical camp will be organised for the locals and activities will be carried out to maintain a friendly relation amongst the army personnel and the civilians. Collection of garbage will be conducted and disposed-off after the expedition in the rightful place”, informed CO Bhandari.
ITBP IG S.K. Sharma, Raj Bhawan secretary Raj Yadav, ITBP officers and members of the expedition were present during the flag-off ceremony.
