VP to inaugurate Bhaichung Stadium on Oct 20: CM
GANGTOK,: The ‘Governor’s Cup’ badminton tournament organised by Raj Bhawan Secretariat in association with Badminton Association of Sikkim concluded today at Raj Bhawan badminton hall. Governor Ganga Prasad attended the closing ceremony of the two-day event as the chief guest and Chief Minister P.S. Golay as the guest of honour, informs a Raj Bhawan press release.
The Chief Minister, while speaking at the closing ceremony, said such tournaments will benefit the sporting community of the State. He urged the younger generation to take up sports as a career and accordingly put dedicated efforts to be successful.
Golay also informed that the newly-constructed Bhaichung Stadium at Namchi will be inaugurated by the Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, on October 20. He mentioned that this new infrastructure would help in making Sikkim an epicentre of sports in the Northeast region.
In his address, the Governor stated that the Northeast region is a powerhouse of talent and Khelo India provides an opportunity to Sikkim youth to showcase their talent.
The Governor lauded the sporting talents of Sikkim and said that the Khelo India would help in realising the Olympic goal set by the Prime Minister.
The Governor also urged the youth of Sikkim to explore the ever-growing world of sports. He stressed on the importance of sports and education in shaping the youth for a healthy and a disciplined lifestyle and encouraged the youngsters to take up sports as a hobby or a profession.
Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba also addressed the gathering and applauded Raj Bhawan Secretariat for organising the tournament.
Raj Bhawan Secretariat felicitated Sukanta Das, general secretary of Badminton Association of Sikkim, for his contribution towards development of badminton in Sikkim.
The tournament had men’s doubles and mixed doubles events.
In the mixed doubles, Jacob Khaling and Sunandita Bista emerged winners defeating Dr. Tshering N. Gyasto and Tashi Choden Gurung in the final.
Likewise, Dr. Tshering N. Gyasto paired up with Subash Tamang to win the men’s doubles. Jacob Khaling and Tenzing Loden Lepcha finished runners-up.
