DARJEELING: The Himalayan Transport Coordination Committee (HTCC), an apex body of different syndicates here has decided that all transport services will remain closed till June 15 in the hills, except those carrying essential supplies and involved in emergency services. The decision has been taken keeping in view the excess vehicular movement during the time of coronavirus-induced lockdown.
HTCC secretary Parshu Hingmang said, "We have decided that transport will remain closed till June 15 wherein all taxis and non-taxis will remain closed with exemption for vehicles carrying essential supplies like medicine, milk, water, ration, vegetables along with those who have emergency work.”
The HTCC maintained that the committee have also formed a surveillance committee in Darjeeling to check vehicles bringing in returnees. Those who come from the check points and follow the proper procedure will only be allowed to come here, said HTCC president S.N. Pradhan.
The HTCC will also take up different demands with West Bengal Chief Minister through the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration which includes insurance for drivers as they were also working during the pandemic along with 50 percent exemption in different vehicle related taxes and fees till December 31among other.
On the other hand, GTA chairman Anit Thapa today received 75 people belonging to the GTA area along with Siliguri and Dooars who reached NJP from Gurugram.
“The GTA managed vehicles to those going to Kalimpong and Darjeeling. Their medical checks will be done in their respective places and will be sent to home quarantine or a quarantine centreafter their results come,” said Thapa.
