Intra-GPU sports activities to be held across Sikkim

GANGTOK: The Directorate of Panchayati Raj under Rural Development department is all set to hold intra-GPU sports activity starting February 25. The event is being held in collaboration with Sports department.
Rural Development principal secretary C.S. Rao said the event is first such being held in the State.
Sports activities will be held in all 185 GPUs of the State for five days, to promote healthy lifestyle and encourage youth to take up sports as a career in future.  The event will have football, boxing, and taekwondo, basketball, table tennis and other sports disciplines.
“By holding this kind of activity we can provide platform to the youth in rural areas and identify talents” said Rao. He said the idea was convened by the Chief Minister.
“We have already issued necessary directions and have requested all the GPUs across State to organize sports activities in their respective villages. We have requested the GPUs having sound finance to utilize funds for the event,” said Rao.
“This will be a calendar event. For next year we have made proposal under ‘Fit India Mission’ in our Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) so that funds can be made available for organizing this kind of activities in a grand manner. Furthermore, we in days to come, plan to hold similar activity at the zilla panchayat level, district level and eventually at the State level,” said Rao.
