KIIT’s Tryst With Academic Discipline Amid The Pandemic

Prof. Achyuta Samanta

18th Convocation of KIIT Deemed to be University
The past few years have been marked by a period of uncertainty when the Covid-induced challenges threatened to derail the academic discipline. Online classes, hybrid teaching and home learning came to be identified as the new normal. The time since the beginning of 2020 was unprecedented in many ways, especially for students who spent much of their time taking lessons at home. Equally challenging before us was to maintain academic rigour through the online mode as we place a high value on the standard of technical education. Amid such a level of stress, the batch of 2022 has performed well with its perseverance and resilience. The University stood all along with the students in these difficult times, supporting them all the way in their quest for academic excellence
Climbing On Rankings
KIIT began as a routine educational institution but quickly rose to the top of the charts for all national and international rankings. This growth was fueled by an unwavering commitment to helping communities. As we commemorate 25 years of academic achievement, we are filled with a sense of pride in our achievements. KIIT has redefined the education landscape in the country. It has earned what it deserved, global acclaim and reputation in a very short period - 8th best University in the world in the prestigious Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022 for the impressive progress made in 'reducing inequalities’ (SDG10). KIIT has been placed in the cohorts of 201-250 in the overall category among Asian universities by the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of Asia's best universities for 2022. The national ranking of 20th position all over India by the National Institute of Ranking Framework, Ministry of Education is exemplary. The prestigious Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), USA has accredited KIIT Deemed to be University’s six engineering programs. With this 'Gold Standard', KIIT has become the only institution in the country to have accreditation from ABET (USA) in all six engineering programmes besides also being accredited by all the statutory bodies of the Govt of India. It is the first Indian University to achieve a “Five Stars Rating” from the prestigious QS Star Ranking System.
Hand Holding and supporting the Initiative of KISS
KIIT has been supporting and mentoring the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) for 25 years now. KISS is a home for 70,000 indigenous children (30,000 alumni and 30,000 currently pursuing education on the campus and 10,000 students on satellite campuses) who are provided with accommodation, nutrition, holistic education, skills and sports empowerment fully free of cost. Its higher education constituent, KISS Deemed to be University, is the only university in the world exclusively for indigenous scholars. KIIT’s support has enabled KISS to get the most coveted prize in the realm of literacy - the UNESCO International Literacy Prize 2022. Such a marvellous achievement would not have been possible, had KIIT not gotten the back of KISS.
A Look through Window of Knowledge
KIIT has made immense contributions to Education, Healthcare, Sustainable Development, Literature and Culture, and more specifically Sports. KIIT and KISS have become the Knowledge and Logistical Hub of FIFA's 'Football For School' for Odisha, India and South Asia. It is a first-of-its-kind collaboration of FIFA with any academic institution in the world. KIIT and KISS have made exemplary contributions to the field of Sports. KIIT has nurtured and produced seven Olympians who are pursuing their education at KIIT free of cost and are being wholeheartedly supported in all their endeavours in the field of Sports. It is pertinent to mention here that KIIT and KISS have produced over 5000 sportspersons playing at different zonal, state and international levels.
KIIT A Global Village
No argument should be enough to contest the reality that KIIT Deemed-to-be University stands out as it is a student and parent-friendly University. A humongous number, 35000 Students from all over India and 1500 students from 65 countries study here and find a home in the University, which is a melting pot of culture. The university has triggered a wave of development in the northern fringes of Bhubaneswar, making it a hub of economic activity. KIIT is a world in itself that espouses the cause of ‘World is One.
Record Placements
KIIT is known for its excellent track record of placements since its inception. We have been able to achieve excellent placements for 2019-20 and 2020-21 batches despite the pandemic. Keeping up with our past trend, KIIT is on its way to achieving record placement for the 2022 and 2023 graduating batches due to the dedicated efforts of our training and placement department. Our students have bagged 5000 job offers, with the highest CTC of 52 Lakhs and an average of 6.05 lakhs. It is not an easy task to accomplish given the circumstances - trimming company sizes and lay-offs.
Beyond The Normal
It is the only University in India to have been visited by 22 Nobel laureates from across the globe and has addressed the students. Over hundreds of collaborations have been made with universities far and wide across the globe. We are facilitating student and faculty exchanges, research collaborations and membership in international associations for cooperation in raising standards of education and making KIIT a global brand.  The students and staff have worked relentlessly to help KIIT reach commendable heights. We are glad to receive the students back to the campus after two years of lull. We have recalibrated our campus so that our students learn and grow with all safety precautions and protocols in mind.
For the batch graduating in 2022, my message would be that ‘you are lucky to attend this Convocation in person. We have endeavoured to provide the most personal touch through the use of technology and augmented reality for this Convocation - 18th Convocation of KIIT Deemed to be University -- for those who cannot make it to the event in person.
The 18th Convocation of KIIT Deemed to be University will be graced by the visionary and compassionate Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik as the Chief Guest. Dr. Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Nobel Peace Laureate 1992 will deliver the Convocation lecture in presence of esteemed guests like Mr John Desmond Forbes Anderson (Lord Waverley) Hon’ble Member of British Parliament, UK.
To the Class of 2022, I truly associate with your feeling as you are upset about not being able to stay on this wonderful campus for a long time. I urge everyone to pursue every ambition and dream and embrace the responsibility to build this community as their priority. Let me reiterate that you are and will always be kings and queens, like your hostels say, Kings Palace and Queens Castle. Go kiss the world and move in the direction of your calling and always try to be good humans first.
