Lapses are simply indefensible, insensitive restrictions being imposed: Chamling

GANGTOK: Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Wednesday slammed the SKM government over sudden spike in Covid-19 cases and the subsequent partial State-wide lockdown measures announced.
“The sudden spike of Covid-19 cases in Sikkim and the valid fear of community transmission have caused massive public anxiety. I am thinking of the people in Rongli and Rhenock in particular who are now faced with the horrifying experience of new cases detected in the area. The general apprehension level in the State is only rising. The lapses on the part of the State administration and GREF are simply indefensible. How gross negligence on the part of the GREF camp went unnoticed is a question that Sikkim is asking,” said Chamling in a media statement.
“To go from zero cases a few weeks ago to over 200 cases in Sikkim now and some suspicion of public transmission testify as to how poorly the State handled the situation,” said Chamling.
Chamling, also the SDF president, questioned restrictions in movement of vehicles and people imposed by the State government starting today.
“The impulsive nature of the guidelines that are being imposed is worrying. The government’s insensitivity to public hardship is unfortunate. Public inconvenience is inevitable in a pandemic like this and we are absolutely ready to bear with necessary inconvenience for the benefit of all. But sadly, most of what people are going through are the outcome of poor administrative decisions.”
“The complete restriction of private vehicles and two-wheelers is a completely illogical decision. The sudden decision to ban inter-district transportation even in non-red zones is also questionable. Many have been stranded outside their homes. Public transportation with limited taxies playing on an odd-even basis has been over-stretched, thus compelling commuters to expose themselves to an even higher risk situation,” said Chamling.
The former Chief Minister said the SKM government has been displaying ‘unashamed negligence’ in public functions.
“I hope that the government will acknowledge the unashamed negligence shown in public functions in the past weeks and months. The shameful pictures of crowds posing for cameras without mask and social distancing will be etched in public memory for a long time to come,” he said.
Chamling requested the State government to conduct meticulous contact tracing and comprehensive testing as soon as possible.
“In a distressing situation like this I would like to convey my heartfelt sympathy and concern to all the dear people of Sikkim. My special sympathy to those who have been the direct victims of Covid-19 which include brave front-line warriors (policeman and health worker) due to avoidable lapses. Let us not lose heart and stay firm in our resolve. Notwithstanding the poor administrative performance, we, the people, must continue to cooperate with the government. We will continue to cooperate with their decisions but we must also never cease to constructively criticize their poor decisions and lack of insight. We must listen to the governmental guidelines while we gently demand to be heard. Because the battle is collective, the outcome will affect us collectively,” said Chamling.
