LETTER TO THE EDITOR

ONE RANK ONE PENSION (OROP)

Dear Sir,

One Rank One Pension (OROP) is the biggest grouse defence veterans have been fighting for decades, but the central government failed to appreciate and recognise so far, the reasons submitted for the issue.

It is fine, we will go on pressing our demand till some wisdom ushers in the government and accepts it sympathetically, but some, heartless, clueless and mischievous persons go around telling that long pending demand of veterans OROP had been sanctioned by NDA Government since 2015, which is a cruel joke made at our expense.

We would like to bring to the notice of all regarding one such news item published in SIKKIM EXPRESS dated 9th Nov 2020 regarding OROP, written by A Bharat BhushanBabu,  which we Indian Army veterans from Sikkim differ and condemn it and urge people to refrain from cutting such jokes against poor veterans. There are people who had misled even the Prime Minister of the country who had on a number of occasions remarked that long pending demand of veterans OROP had been given by his NDA government. Yes, the previous NDA government did promise and even NDA II too had promised to make it historic by meeting the demand, but they conveniently ignored it and has failed to keep their promise. In the present case, the writer,A Bharat BhushanBabu, who claimed to be spokesperson of the ministry of Defence, should have been aware of the whole issue. In this connection, there is also a PIL case going on in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India filed by one of the veterans a few years back and Hon’ble Court has not given any judgement so far.

During 2015, the new NDA government did raise the level of pensions drawn by various ranks and file of veterans closer to the level of new pensioners and if the government was honest to fulfil their promise they could have sanctioned OROP simultaneously over newly raised pensions but that they did not do so. Well, as far as the raising of the level of pension is concerned, the then UPA government also did raise the level of pension bringing closer to new pensioners  in 2011 but  thereafter they  also shied away to make decisions to sanction the  final part of OROP. Therefore, a clarification from the writer on this crucial issue is requested, otherwise the veterans and dependent families residing in far flung areas of Sikkim will be misled.
