Lockdown in GTA urban areas ends

DARJEELING: Thelockdown imposed in municipal areas of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) along with ruralplaces reporting Covid caseswill be lifted on Sunday after 14 days.
The GTA and the administration had first imposed the lockdown for seven days following a surge in coronavirus cases. It was further extended in the GTA urban areas ofKalimpong, Darjeeling, Mirik and Kurseong along with other places like Tindharia, Bijanbari, Sukhia and Sonada.
Announcing lockdown relaxations from Sunday, GTA chairman Anit Thapa today said, “We are constantly monitoring the Covid situation in GTA region and if needed, further lockdown can be enforced only in the containment zones.”
Thapa appealed to the people to follow health guidelines and wear masks at all times as they did not want to loosen their grip on the situation which was improving. “If we can maintain our current testing trend, which has been very encouraging, we might even flatten the coronavirus curve in the coming weeks,” he said.
Meanwhile, 22 persons were detected Covid-19 positive from Kalimpong subdivision. Fifteen among them were from Teesta and Melli areas and rest are from Kalimpong town.
