DARJEELING: The GNLF-affiliated GorkhaEktaChalakSangathan (GECS) has condemned the decision of the Himalayan Transport Coordination Committee (HTCC) to suspended transport till June 15 in the hills.
The HTTC had on Tuesday announced that only vehicles providing essential services or carrying essential commodities would be allowed to ply. Other vehicles would stay off roads in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
In response, GECS president Samir Rai on Wednesday said the Sangathan condemns the decision. The right to take this decision lies with the State government, he said.
Rai also criticised the decision of the HTCC to form surveillance groups that would monitor vehicles coming in the GTA area bringing home the stranded people.
Meanwhile, Darjeeling MLA NirajZimba continued with his initiative to reach relief food items to people in remote areas of the hills. He reached Kalimati in Ambootia, Kurseong today where there is no road connection. He was seen walking for 10 km carrying supplies to be distributed on the way.
A total of 17 needy families were provided with essential food commodities.
