OPD services start at Old STNM hospital

GANGTOK: With the new STNM hospital at Sochyagang near here handling Covid-19 cases, the OPD services have been shifted to the old STNM hospital in the capital.
The OPD became functional on Monday wherein all major OPDs apart from ENT, ophthalmology, oncology, psychiatry, physiotherapy, cardiology and dental are operating for now.
Around 70 patients were registered on Monday for OPD consultation in old STNM hospital. The turnout of patients for the first day of OPD after being shifted from new STNM hospital is quite a good number despite the lockdown.
“Life of STNM hospital has revived with this shift here despite the pandemic. The Health officials seemed happy to be back where they took charge of cleaning their respective departments with full enthusiasm with the help of GMC workers”, informed STNM hospital director Dr. N. Shenga.
Dr. Shenga further informed that Covid protocol will be followed in the old STNM hospital as well provided the patients turn out is in lower number compared to normal days. Co-operation from public is the need of hour for the convenience and safety of everyone, she said.
OPDs for major departments like medicine, surgery, super speciality, eurology, plastic surgery and gastroenterology, gynaecology, respiratory medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedic, dermatology, pain clinic, injection and dressing room, blood collection centre are functional while ENT, eye, physiotherapy, cardiology and dental has not been shifted due to their equipment.
Likewise, oncology and psychiatry have also not been shifted due to the in-patients and being located at the separate building in the new STNM complex.
Talking about the manpower, Dr. Shenga informed that the staffs are same as in new STNM hospital of all the departments that have been shifted here. Heads of the departments and nurses are here including head assistants for registration and supplies of store services.
“DoP has also allotted good strength of supporting staff from other departments which will be of great help at this hour,” she added.
On the functioning of new STNM hospital, Dr. Shenga said that only serious patients will be admitted there and others would be treated here or referred as per the need of the case.
The hospital director also lauded the role of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) workers and mayor Shakti Singh Chaudhary for readying the hospital in a short notice. “Looking at the historical value it is a good feeling to see the old STNM functional again. If this is made into city hospital then it will be best for all,” shared mayor Chaudhary who was present at the hospital.
As the hospital was locked and unused since being shifted to the new facility, the GMC workers undertook a weeklong cleaning drive.
