GANGTOK: The Sikkim Republican Party (SRP) has demanded an independent inquiry with respect to unchecked Sikkim entry of Gauri Shanker Gupta and his family in violation of Covid-19 guidelines.
Addressing a press meet here, SRP president K.B. Rai said the illegal entry of the five-member group into Sikkim on July 1 through Melli checkpost involves people holding highest posts in the government. It is not a matter of negligence but a case of highhandedness, he said.
“The DGP of Sikkim Police is the main person responsible in the case. The particular entry has not only violated the State and Central norms against Covid-19 pandemic but also brought the entire State under risk. Sikkim Police is known nationwide for its good work but this action has tarnished its image,” said the SRP president.
Two separate enquiry reports submitted to the State government have suggested that the unchecked passage to Gauri Shankar and his group happened because of a miscommunication at the border checkpost between the SHO and the duty staff. Following the reports, the State government on Saturday revoked the suspension orders of two constables on duty at Melli checkpost.
“We demand an independent probe in this matter. The probe should be done by a retired chief secretary or retired judges. Before the probe is initiated, we request the State government to suspend the DGP and other personnel connected with the case till the probe is complete,” said Rai.
Rai said the enquiry reports submitted to the State government were not satisfactory. We will write to the Prime Minister’s office so that the case is investigated independently, he said.
The SRP president said the recorded conversation between the DGP and the Melli SHO “clearly demonstrates the highhandedness of the DGP”. Nobody going out of Sikkim needs to call the DGP for intervention or support as the exit process is very simple as described by the DIG (Range) in his press meet yesterday, he said.
People have given the mandate to the SKM party to run the government but the government is silent today when irresponsible actions from government officials have put the lives of Sikkimese at risk, said the SRP president. We demand the State government to take stringent action at the earliest, he added.
