Protest rally in hills against CAA, NRC

DARJEELING,: Hundreds of people on Friday turned out for the protest rally at Darjeeling organised by GJM (Binay Tamang camp) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Similar rallies were held in Kalimpong, Mirik and Kurseong.

“The huge gathering in the rallies across the hills shows that the people here are against the CAA and NRC. We will do more programmes after Christmas. In January, we plan to hold similar rallies in Terai, Siliguri and Dooars,” said Binay Tamang to media.

Tamang is demanding that the Gorkhas are declared as Original Inhabitants (OI) before NRC is implemented and is also seeking reintroduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the hills which was removed in 1990. The Morcha is also demanding the refugees to be granted Indian citizenship under CAA are not given settlement in the hills, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts.

“The ILP was there in the hills and Dooars in 1950 but for different reasons, it was removed in 1990. We want the ILP to be reintroduced here. We will write to the Prime Minister and the Union Home minister. The CAA will not be applicable once ILP is implemented here,” said Tamang.
