RashtriyaPoshanMaah launched in Sikkim

The State-level Rashtriya Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month) on the theme ‘Together Towards Kuposhan Mukth Bharat,’ was inaugurated by IPR secretary Namrata Thapa during an event organised by Social Welfare department here today.
The function was held with an objective to encourage people’s participation for addressing malnutrition amongst young children and women with targeted approach to ensure health and nutrition and attaining a malnutrition free India.
Launched in 2018, the Rashtriya Poshan Maah (Prime Minister’s Overreaching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) is being celebrated during the entire month of September.
The month-long event in Sikkim is organised by the Social Justice & Welfare department.
Addressing the event as the chief guest, the IPR secretary stated that Poshan (nutrition) is very important for women in different age groups and added that no target group is left out and deprived of essential nutrition. She drew attention towards the important role played by nutrition in helping children and students to attain their optimum potential.
Thapa added that IPR department will fully render support and provide all the assistance in disseminating information and sensitising public regarding the importance of Poshan Abhiyaan through various platforms.She also encouraged all the stakeholders to work collectively for this noble cause and make the State and the country Kuposhanmukth Bharat (Malnutrition-free India).
Social Welfare principal director (ICDS) Phuchung Bhutia highlighted on the aims and objectives of Poshan Abhiyaan and major measures taken by the department in implementing the Poshan Maah. He further highlighted on the four pillars of Poshan Abhiyaan which included inter-sectoral convergence for better service delivery, use of technology (ICT) for real time growth monitoring and tracking of women and children, intensified health and nutrition services for the first 1,000 days.
Bhutia added that implementation of the scheme would be based on intense monitoring and convergence of various action plans right up to the grassroots level.  He further mentioned that the Abhiyaan targets to address malnourishment and anaemia among young children, women and adolescent girls and to reduce low birth weight.
PoshanMaah is celebrated in the month of September to further accelerate the various activities like community based events, incremental learning approach, and other activities related to nutrition and health under PoshanAbhiyan and to create a Jan Andolan in the process, added Bhutia.
The activities to be carried out during the PoshanMaah are identification and tracking of children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), plantation drive for promoting kitchen garden at all the AWCs, online essay competition on nutrition, digital poshanpanchayat and digital recipe competitions.
The competition is open to all and the winners will be awarded with cash prizes. The principal director urged the districts and blocks to help in dissemination of information regarding the same.
Health joint director Dr. Anita Bhutia, in her presentation, highlighted on Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).  She also presented a brief report and assessment on National Family Health survey and provided information on population, health and nutrition, with an emphasis on women and young children.(With inputs from IPR)
