GANGTOK, January 7: Outstation player Robin Bist has been named captain of Sikkim cricket team ahead of the start of the State’s campaign in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He will lead a 20-man squad in the T20 championship, where Sikkim’s first encounter will be against Mizoram, at Chennai on January 11.
While the experienced middle-order batsman will lead the side, senior Sikkim batsman Lee Yong Lepcha will serve as his deputy.
The selection of a captain is one of the most important and critical decisions that can be made as the impact and influence is deep felt across all layers within a team, and Sikkim coaching staff decided to stick with the experienced Bist, who was a member of the Rajasthan team that won the Ranji Trophy in successive seasons.
The 33-year-old was part of Delhi Daredevils squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has also played for India-A, Central Zone and Himachal Pradesh.
Bist, the most experienced player in the Sikkim team, has had mixed success in his T20I appearances. He has scored 395 in 26 innings at an average of 16.4 with the highest score of 46.
Bist is the second outstation player after Iqbal Abdullah (2019-20) to lead Sikkim team.
