GANGTOK: Plantation drives were conducted on Thursday at different parts of the State by the SDF workers while observing environmental programme ‘10 Minutes to Earth’.
Party president and former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling took part in the plantation drive at the premises of SDF Bhawan, Indira Bypass here. Senior party functionaries and workers were present on the occasion.
‘10 Minutes to Earth’ was an initiative of the previous SDF government and held annually since 2009.
Speaking on the occasion, Chamling said the SDF government had initiated the ‘10 Minutes to Earth’ programme for environment protection and to give a message to the world. During our government, we made a rule wherein one per cent of the State’s budget had to be spent for environment protection. We also made a rule wherein ten saplings had to be planted when one tree was chopped down and only two trees could be fallen in a year in private holdings, he said.
“The saplings we have planted in our government can be seen today as trees at roadsides. The forest cover in Sikkim has increased by 5 per cent due to our green programmes, the natural sources of water have stopped drying and there is an increased awareness among the people towards environment. We had managed to make Sikkim a model Green State and made environment protection a people’s movement. Our development path was always environment-friendly,” said the former Chief Minister.
