Sikkim bags six national Panchayat awards

GANGTOK: Sikkim has bagged six national level awards in four separate categories during the national level award ceremony for best performing gram/block and zilla panchayat held through video conference on Friday.
The award ceremony was chaired by Union minister for Panchayati Raj and Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar. Sikkim was represented by State Rural Development principal secretary C.S. Rao, Panchayati Raj director Prabhakar Rai and other officials.
The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar was awarded to South District Zilla Panchayat, Ranka GPU (east) and Yangten GPU (west). Pachey-Samsing GPU (east) was awarded the Child Friendly Gram Panchayat Award, Sangkhu Radu Khandu GPU (west) won the Gram Panchayat Development Plan Award and Premlakha-Subhaneydara GPU (east) was presented the Nanaji Deshmukh Rastriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar, an official release informs.
Ranka GPU panchayat president Govind Bhattarai represented the Aawardee panchayats of the State in the video conference and shared the good practices being taken up by the zilla and GPUs for the total upliftment of the society. He mentioned about the various training programmes being organized by the GPU for the unemployed youths of the gram panchayat followed by success stories.
Union minister Tomar congratulated Ranka GPU and praised the president and members for initiating such works with further suggestion to collect nominal charges from the trainees to inculcate ownership of the training. He opined that in order to move forward for achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat, it is necessary to make Gram Panchayats as Atmanirbhar. He suggested all to work towards achieving the goal as envisaged by the Prime Minister.
Chief Minister P.S. Golay and Rural Development minister Sonam Lama have congratulated all the awardees of zilla, gram panchayats of Sikkim and ensured required support for holistic development of the State.
