Sikkim wins silver medal in national bench press championship

GANGTOK,: Devendra Basnet won the sole medal for Sikkim in the recently held 30th National Men & Women Equipped & Classic Bench Press Championship 2021.
A 15-member Sikkim Powerlifting Association (SPA) team had represented Sikkim at the championship held in Goa.
Devendra clinched a silver medal in the master’s category.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Devendra informed that more than 1,600 athletes had participated in the championship and the competition was challenging in all the categories.
“To win a medal for the State in such a competitive national championship is a matter of pride for me and I am thankful to SPA for their constant support”, shared Devendra.  He added that the association has been trying to conduct national bench press championship in the State.
Sonam Karthak, the State team’s assistant coach, informed that Sikkim team gave their best in all the respective categories.
“The State team will now prepare for the upcoming national powerlifting championship scheduled to be held in Kerala next February,” he said.
He mentioned that interested athletes can attend the selection trials for State team in December after which they will conduct a training camp.
Congratulating Devendra Basnet for winning a medal for the state, SPA member Ranjit Sharma thanked the State government and individuals for their support to the association in sending teams to the nationals.
