GEYZING: An amateur photographer from Sombaria, West Sikkim has secured second position in the national orchid photography contest organized by the Orchid Society of Assam.
Prakash Limboo, a teacher by profession and an orchid grower from Tikpur under Daramdin constituency, had sent a picture of longipetala species of orchid and the result was announced on July 7.
Peakash Limboo informed that the online photography contest was organized to encourage the orchid growers from different States of the country and also for sensitizing the orchid growers on the need of conserving the various rare species of orchids those are on the verge of extinction.
The photography contest was conducted at national level and was participated by photographers from Thailand, Bhutan and Australia as well.
“Securing second place out of thousands of entries sent by the participants at a national level competition is definitely a feat to be cherished for an amateur photographer like me. I am an avid orchid lover and a person involved in orchid farming rather than a photographer but being in the winning side of the contest was indeed a memorable moment for me,” said Limboo.
Limboo said that apart from being an educator, he is also involved in orchid farming since several years with more than 300 species of orchid in his farm currently. He opined that orchid farming could be a source of livelihood if done in an appropriate way.
"Orchids farming needs dedication, knowledge, suitable weather condition and patience for a good harvest. Sikkim can lead the way in orchids farming in near future,” he said.
Limboo further informed that as a reward for securing second position in the contest, he was incorporated as a member of the Orchid Society of Assam and awarded a cash prize and the certificate of appreciation by the organizing committee.
