State to set up Cancer hospital in Jorethang: CM


GEYZING,: Chief Minister P.S. Golay attended the concluding day of winter sports and cultural fest organized by Chumbung secondary school under Soreng-Chakung constituency, West Sikkim today.

Minister Bhim Hang Subba, Salghari-Zoom MLA Sunita Gajmer, Chief Minister’s political secretary Jacob Khaling, also the chief patron of the nine-day event, were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering of students and locals, the Chief Minister expressed that education is fundamental right of the people and added that the SKM government is committed to work for development of education sector in the State through effective and constructive educational policies. “In this era of competitions and opportunities, students should remain committed to their studies and responsibilities. Education is necessary for creation of skilled, advanced and civilized society,” said Golay.

Expressing his concern over rising rate of cancer cases in Sikkim, Golay informed that the State government is establishing a cancer hospital in a tie-up with the Central government at Jorethang. He added that the government employees would be brought under free health insurance scheme being initiated by the State government.

The Chief Minister announced that an Industrial Training Centre would be established at Chumbung Chakhung GPU under skill development programme of the State government to facilitate the youth. He further informed that considering the scarcity of drinking water in the constituency, a comprehensive project to find a concrete solution regarding drinking water problem in the constituency would be taken up.

On the various demands of up-gradation of Chumbung secondary school to senior secondary school, construction of 8-roomed school building, the Chief Minister maintained that the State government would consider the demand and sought a detailed report. He informed that MP local area development fund would be utilized for betterment of education sector in Sikkim.

The Chief Minister also spoke about facilities of housing scheme for the poor people under ‘Garib Awas Yojana’ and pressed for the development of tourism sector in an extensive way to make a way for easy and sustainable means of livelihood.

He reiterated that the developmental promises made by SKM party to the people would be fulfilled and maintained that the State government would focus on development of West Sikkim.

'Chumbung Idol', a singing competition, inter-constituency dance competition, open football tournament and other cultural activities were other attractions of the programme. In the final of the football tournament, Red Panda Namchi defeated government secondary school, Chumbung 2-0.

Trophies and cash prizes were handed over to the winner and runner-up teams.

The organizing committee felicitated Chief Minister Golay, political secretary Jacob Khaling and other eminent personalities of the society on the occasion.
