Tea garden youths choose football over mobile games


BAGDOGRA,:  Hundreds of youths, especially from the tea garden belt of Bagdogra and its surroundings, are nowadays busy practicing football instead of playing virtual games in mobile phones. Credit goes to social worker Sharmila Rai Khati and football coach Jassi Singh who have taken an initiative to provide free football training for the youth of tea gardens and villages of Naxalbari block.
The youths who were playing football matches with bare feet have received football boots to practice for district and State level leagues.
Sharmila from Bagdogra and Jassi, a resident of Kolkata, also aims to provide platform for these youth to participate in State and national level leagues after providing thorough training.
The duo has started the noble work since last five years and several youths have already played in prestigious matches in Kolkata.
The training is provided for girls, boys and seniors boys from 8 am every day at Bagdogra.
Prava Oraon, a resident of Singhiajhora tea estate of Bagdogra, said, "Being from an economically weak family it was difficult for our parents to buy kits used to practice football, We used to practice bare footed and do not have fare to go to play in matches held in other cities. But after Ma’am and Sir arrived here our dreams have fulfilled and hoped to become a football star in near future."
Mamuni Singha from Kotiajote in Naxalbari dreams to become the best footballer of the State. Singha said they have achieved a lot with the support from Sharmila and Jassi.
According to Sharmila, they are trying their best to support the needy players especially who doesn't gets proper coaching and guidelines.
Jassi said the skills of the players in tea garden belts are appreciable but needs professionalism and technical support.
