GANGTOK: Two paramilitary jawans – one each from ITBP and SSB – have tested positive for coronavirus taking the State’s Covid-19 tally to 48. The ITBP jawan is also the first Covid-19 case reported from North Sikkim.
The ITBP mans the Indo-China border in east and north districts while the SSB looks after the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan border in east and west districts.
In his health bulletin on Friday, Health director general-cum-secretary Dr. Pempa T. Bhutia informed that the ITBP jawan had come from Sonipat, Haryana reaching Bagdogra, Siliguri on a flight from Delhi. He then took a 3-day quarantine in an ITBP camp at Siliguri before heading to his ITBP camp at Rangrang, near Mangan in North Sikkim on June 18.
He went directly in an ITBP vehicle to Rangrang where the Central force had set up a quarantine centre for its personnel. There were 13 ITBP personnel in the Rangrang centre, it was informed.
Since the 31-year-old was showing some symptoms, samples of the jawan and five others collected randomly in the ITBP centre at Rangrang were sent for testing at STNM hospital viral lab, Gangtok. His sample tested positive while other five samples came negative yesterday, informed Dr. Bhutia.
So far North Sikkim had no Covid-19 positive case.
The ITBP jawan has been shifted to the Covid-19 isolation ward at STNM hospital.
Dr. Pempa informed that as per discussions of the ITBP officials and Health officials, it was decided that tests of all persons along with the vehicle driver and ITBP health attendants at the Rangrang camp would be conducted on coming Tuesday.
Dr. Pempa informed that the Rangrang area would be a containment zone till tests of all the ITBP personnel comes negative.
The second Covid-19 positive case was reported on Friday after 68 samples were tested in the morning.
Just before this bulletin, report came that one positive result came from the 68 samples testing in the morning shift today, said Dr. Pempa. As per the report, the positive case is a 22-year-old man from SSB, Singtam who is being immediately shifted to STNM hospital isolation ward, he said.
Dr. Pempa informed that contact tracing of the second positive case is also going on. We will trace and test all those who have come in contact with him, he said adding that further details could not be shared as the report came just before the bulletin.
In his bulletin, Dr. Pempa observed that, given the new development, proper facility quarantine of 14 days should be arranged in the State itself for the paramilitary personnel entering Sikkim. In the meeting with the Army today, the Army said their personnel coming to Sikkim first take a 14-day or 21-day quarantine at Siliguri and sent directly to the borders, he said.
However, it is felt that there should be proper facility quarantine of ITBP and SSB based in Sikkim for their personnel coming to the State, shared Dr. Pempa.
