Two-wheelers get parking spaces in Darjeeling town

: Darjeeling Police have started an initiative to provide parking spaces for private vehicles and two-wheelers in the town area.
A parking lot for about 50 two-wheelers was allocated in the Motor Stand and another lot for around 35 two-wheelers near the railway station by Darjeeling Police. Parking spaces for private vehicles would be demarcated in coming days.
Darjeeling Police Traffic OC Dorjee Sherpa said, “There have been complains that private vehicles and two-wheelers are not getting parking space in the town. Keeping this in mind, two parking lots for two-wheelers have been started on a trial basis. The municipality will later fix the parking fees.”
Parking at the Motor Stand is permitted only till 4:30 pm in the afternoon. The space will then be used by the food stalls.
“Soon we will have some good news for private vehicle owners as well. The police along with the municipality have completed a survey on this and mapped out new parking spaces for private vehicles in the town area which will be started later on,” said Sherpa.  The proposed parking spaces would have the capacity of 40-50 vehicles.
It was informed that new traffic rules which started before the Covid pandemic earlier this year are being reintroduced in Darjeeling town.
“We were just starting the new traffic rules like pick up and drop points for vehicles in some parts of the town area. The vehicles would be kept in the parking lots for the rest of the day. People seem to have forgotten these rules due to the long lockdown. We will again start implementing those shortly,” said Sherpa.
