34th Sikkim State Badminton Championship concludes

GANGTOK, : The 34th Sikkim State Badminton Championship organised by Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS) concluded today at Indoor Badminton Hall, Paljor Stadium. The championship, which began on August 22, had 161 players from across the State.

The finale was attended by Soreng-Chakung MLA Aditya Golay as the chief guest along with Sports and Youth Affairs secretary Yangchen Doma Tamang.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Aditya Golay congratulated all the winners and participants. He stated, “It’s a matter of pride and honour for aspiring badminton players to showcase their talent at a state-level tournament. Participation itself is a great achievement.”

He highlighted that under the leadership of Chief Minister PS Golay, all sports disciplines in the State have been achieving new heights. “Since 2019, the State government has been making consistent efforts to foster all sporting disciplines, an area that was neglected in previous administrations,” said Aditya. He emphasised that Sikkim holds immense potential across various sports and, with adequate support and encouragement from the government and associations, the State is poised to produce athletes who will represent not only Sikkim at the national level but also the nation on international platforms.

The MLA added that the current government has brought about a “parivartan” (transformation) in the field of sports and allied sectors such as music and dance, enabling hidden talents to shine at national and international events. He urged athletes and sportspersons to pursue their passions with determination and assured them of all possible support from the government.

Aditya also applauded Badminton Association of Sikkim, under the leadership of its new president Jacob Khaling, for actively organising tournaments across the State. “These platforms have enabled young badminton players to showcase their talent beyond the capital, reaching into the districts as well.”

To further support sports development, the MLA said the State government and various associations are working on establishing academies for boxing, archery and badminton along with a dedicated sports village.

This year’s championship saw participation of 161 players across various categories. All winners were awarded medals, certificates, and cash prizes. The BAS also felicitated five promising players in the under-9 and under-11 categories. Each was awarded a certificate and a badminton kit, sponsored by Meraj Pradhan in memory of his late parents.
